The first era of history is the pre-modern era, which basically means the ancient and the medieval periods of history. The term modern didnt come into effect until after the Scientific Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment. In the pre-modern era, historians tried to portray history as meaningful interpretations of what they believe happened. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote of the wars between Greek and Persia by clearly distinguishing in his history between what was based on hearsay and what he had seen and heard personally or had learned by inquiry. Following him was Thucydides, the father of scientific history, who recorded the Peloponnesian War. He invented rigorous standards for checking his sources accurately, but he rejected supernatural explanations totally.
But the Hebrew historians were the first ones to have a real philosophy of history. They developed a linear view of time, not a cyclical one, and their relationship with God really helped them in this philosophy. They viewed their history through the lens of the promised Messiah.
