Americas views on marital loyalty have changed drastically over the past twenty years. Citizens ridiculed couples who got a divorce back in the 1980s. In the mid 1990s, people chuckled as a blushed leader denied having sexual affairs with a woman whom was not his wife. Now, twenty years after the snickers and sneers of divorces, America is unmoved to divorce and unfaithfulness. In 1987, America watched Gary Hart resign from the Presidential campaign due to accusations of infidelity, while the same type of accusations were pointed on Bill Clinton with less authority, and now, twenty years later, Americas current President is ridiculed for trying to maintain the sanctity of marriage.
In 1996, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word `spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife (Defense, Sec. 3).
