The Experience of a Slave in South Carolina by John Andrew Jackson details
his life of slavery and his escape to freedom. This account describes the
family that owned him. The inhuman way slaves were treated is almost incomprehensible. Jackson tells about being a field hand for the slaveholder. The slaves were punished to extremes for anything from insufficient work to looking the wrong way.
The physical and emotional torture would have been too much to bear, but the
slaves' religious beliefs seemed to be a driving force. The story continues to
his escape. At the end of the article Mr. Jackson tells many of the songs the
slaves sang along with accounts from people in his life that attested to his
honesty and truthfulness to his life's story.
Slavery has always been cruel, but John A. Jackson's account made me realize the two completely different worlds the slaveholders and slaves shared.
