Utilitarianism is a system of ethics according to which the rightness or wrongness of an action should be judged by its consequences. The goal of utilitarian ethics is to promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. According to Mills, "the creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or Great Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation of pleasure" (p.186). In Utilitarianism, Mills proposes a few objections concerning this moral theory. One being, Mills believes that it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. Basically, Mills is stating that although you may be a satisfied swine, you are still in fact a swine. Whereas humans have a the possibility of knowing both satisfaction and dissatisfaction.
