Mexicos Education System: Changes During and After the Revolutionary Period Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
A large part of the transformation of the new Mexico after the Revolution was anticlericalism. Up until the 1920s all public secondary schooling had been carried on in the Preparatoria which had been designed to prepare the sons of wealthy families for the National University (Britton, 1973, p. 239). Literacy rates were at some seventy percent prior to the Revolution and the attendance at school was extremely low. Most education programs were set up to target elite Mexican families and the lower class could not afford a private education.
Several programs were introduced in the early 1900s in attempt to better the public education system. In 1905, President Porifio Díaz introduced the Secretaría de Instrucción Pública (SIP), which failed during the Revolutionary period of 1910-1920. The Mexican Constitution of 1917 outlined the Mexican education system in Article 3.
