Misunderstanding Electronic Messages Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

E-mail, including text messaging, has become one of the most popular forms of communication in our time. It has become so popular, in fact, that some would question how we as a society survived before it. The electronic messages that follow are actual messages that we exchanged between July 11, 2007 and August 21, 2007. These messages are in response to an e-mail that “Joe” sent to “Amy.” Amy read the e-mail while upset with a completely unrelated issue, and misread Joe’s intent in the message. The illustrations will show that lack of emotion in electronic messages can be detrimental to interpersonal relationships. A problem with electronic messaging is that it caries no tone or inflection, no body language or facial expression. When an electronic message is read, the brain, whether intentionally or not, will insert tone and inflection into it. This is problematic when the tone and inflection inserted is based on the reader’s mood at the time. A message intended as jest could be sent, but due to a bad mood, it could be read as criticism or insult. Gestures, tone of voice, ......
