In all, perhaps 300 residents of the Oklahoma oil boomtown, mostly blacks, were brutally killed as Greenwood, their north side neighbourhood, was pillaged and gutted. Madigan, who finished his book well before the recent terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., describes the Tulsa riot as "the deadliest domestic outbreak in America since the Civil War," exceeding even Timothy McVeigh's 1995 fertilizer bomb assault on the federal building in Oklahoma City, which took 168 lives.
