This essay deals with the theme of loss and desperation in the short story The Darling by Anton Chekhov and the novel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. In both texts the protagonists lose an important person in their life either through death or the person leaves forever but that is not the only thing they lose. Tita loses in Like Water for Chocolate her elderly sister Gertrudis and her other sister Rosaura, her lover, her mother and her nephew. In The Darling Olga Semyonovna loses three men. With the loss of the three men she also loses her opinion. Where as in Like Water for Chocolate Tita loses her mind. Through the loss the protagonists fall into a depression but both of them in a different way.
The first man who Olga loses is Kukin who is also her first husband. He is the owner of an open-air theatre which is called Tivoli. He is described as a man who was small, skinny, with yellow face and brushed-up temples. Over some time Olga fell in love with Kukin and they marry.......
