The Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana Purchase is truly one of the largest dealings of land in United States history. It’s the western half of the Mississippi River purchased from France in 1803 by Thomas Jefferson. The purchase doubled the size of the U.S., which strengthened the country in many ways and provided a powerful momentum to the westward expansion. In 1802, Jefferson wrote a prediction in a letter to Pierre Samuel du Pont. It basically said that Spain would recede the Louisiana territory to France. The Mississippi River and New Orleans port had become very vital to American commerce, and the transference of the territory to another authority would be a apprehension for the U.S. Soon the situation got to a higher point, when Spain’s King Charles IV signed a decree to give the territory to France and the Spanish agents in New Orleans repeal Americans’ access to the port’s warehouses, which infuriated in the United States. The warehouse privileges were vital to frontier farmers because they sent their produce down the to the mouth of the Mississippi to await ships.......
