Have you ever been on a swamp tour of the bayous to see the alligators famous to Lafitte, Louisiana? If not, you may want to consider taking a tour in the next five years. According to the article in The Times Picayune titled “Last Chance: The fight to save a disappearing coast”, the erosion of Louisiana coastlines is occurring at such a rapid rate that cities such as Lafitte and the wetlands of our coast will soon be destroyed. The article states that while the national government has acknowledged that there is a problem, there has still been little response in the efforts to restore the coastline. There are three possible solutions that the government can implement to lessen the damage caused by coastal erosion. First the government needs to allow Louisiana and the Gulf Coast more money to cover the cost of restoration. Because canals are stopping sediment deposition that would naturally restore the coast, the second solution is to regulate traffic passing through the port of New Orleans.
