Earth Earth, our home planet, a beautiful blue and white ball when seen from space. It is the third planet from the Sun and it is the largest of the inner planets. The only planet known to support life and contain liquid water on its surface. But there is much more to earth than just a great big ball of mass. Earth is the largest and densest rocky planet. It was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth's interior is divided into four layers, the inner core, the outer core, the mantle, and the crust. Each layer has different characteristics and is made of different elements and minerals. The inner core is a solid metal core made up of nickel and iron. The outer core is a liquid molten core of nickel and iron. The mantle is a dense and mostly solid silicate rock. And finally, the crust is a thin silicate rock material. In the inner core, temperatures reach up too 9000 ˚F. Therefore, the intense heat from the inner core causes material in the outer core and mantle to move around, then causing the lithosphere plates to move slowly over the Earth's surface. ......
