Account for the failure of the democratic experiment in Germany between 1918-1933 Jan.
The Weimar Republic founded (Nov. 1918) at the end of WW1 had to govern a defeated Germany in near anarchy. Its constitution was designed to make Germany a liberal parliamentary democracy but certain inherent political & economic factors combined to turn Germany into a dictatorship within fourteen years.
Eberts SDP which primarily represented the working classes became the leading party in the creation of the Weimar Republic . It was the only party that the allies were willing to negotiate an armistice with. From the start the new government lacked support from the majority of the German people many of whom identified it with defeat and the universally hated Versailles Diktat.
The new government by signing the armistice became known as the November criminals and were blamed by many for the stab in the back that lost Germany the war. The Kaisers advisors were still in place in the Civil Service and the Judiciary and German people were used to authoritarian gover......
