The rate of incarceration of African Americans has soared to unprecedented levels. The United States prison population has risen to nearly 70%. One out of every 21 African American men are in prisons or jails. Also, another disturbing fact is that at any given point, nearly one third of African
American men are in some aspect of the criminal justice system whether it be prison, jail, probation, parole, and all other aspects (Roberts).
The high percentage of African Americans incarcerated from poor neighborhoods brings into question whether or not felony sentences are influenced by a defendantÂ’s race or by other social or ecological factors.
