In ancient Egypt, felines and their dramatic sex life were the mold for the fertility goddess Bastet, and the cat's sensual nature is still known today in how we relate feminine to feline. During the witchcraft era, cats were thought to be the disciples of Satan himself and are still, to this day, negatively associated with witches and superstitions. From positive to negative, gods to demons, cats have influenced the way people thought about life, social structure, behavior, and religion for thousands of years. Charles Darwin is most famous for his theories of evolution in his book Origin of Species (1859). Although, what most people don't know is that he also created a giant leap forward in his study of behavior with his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). In this book, Darwin noted that while a quarreling cat might be crouched with flattened ears, a cat showing affection to its owner may stand tall with arched back and tail held high, and that such postures are the antithesis of each other, corresponding with opposite emotions (Tabor, 1997).
