Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Paper #3: Poetry The poem “Barbie Doll” which was written by Marge Piercy in 1973 is very controversial. The speaker of this poem is a third partied person who merely explains to the readers what happened to a little girl who grows up, and gives us insight to what she feels. The girl in the poem had confidence as a little girl, but when she started growing into a young woman she was looked down upon by other people because she was different. In the end it took suicide to finally be accepted. In the first stanza there is a girl who enjoys life. She plays with her toys like a normal girl and loves herself. She had everything a girl could want, fancy toy stoves and dolls. As she got older she started going through puberty and her body went through a lot of changes. A classmate said it was the “magic of puberty” but to the girl, she just saw it as getting a big nose and fat legs. The tone towards what was happening in this first stanza was very negative. The girl started her life happy but as she started to develop she turned dismal. The word choice “magic of puberty”......
