General Ashley and Major Henry scoped the area where they would bring on hundred men the folowing year to hunt beaver and other animals for fur. The area looked good, plenty of beavers that they could sell their pelts for a great profit. However, they did not expect the problems that occured with the Rickaree indian nation. At first, the group of indian principal chiefs seemed friendly. To the trappers demise, it did not work out that way. On Monday morning, March 10, 1823, General Ashley and Major Henry gathered one hundred men to use as a trapping team. General Ashley, and his partner, Major Henry had already scouted the area one year before the trapping group was picked. The area where the group would be trapping was dangeros and some areas had not yet been explored. Very early on, the group had already had one casualty, a drowning. There were a great number of indians in the area they would be trapping in. Some of the indians seemed friendly, but many were afraid of the white man, many fights broke out.
