Today many countries are experiencing drastic human rights violations. Coincidently, many of these violations are towards women. Women are the number one oppressed group in the world. HIV/AIDS is growing rapidly in the Dominican Republic. Men and women are at high-risk due to low condom use, multiple sex partners, and early sexual activity. Dominican women have suffered tremendously because of this epidemic; their human rights have been basically yanked from their hands and they are looked upon as infected animals.
Women in the Dominican Republic experience many structures of inequality, discrimination and social exclusion. Women have been underrepresented in the workforce and are subject to domestic violence. Dominican women are limited in their access to friends and family as well, by their husbands. 24 percent of women in the Dominican Republic have suffered from physical abuse, and 27 percent of women have suffered physical, sexual, or emotional abuse at the hands of their significant other.
