Whenever one watches tennis today, one immediately notices the racquets, footwork, power, and speed of the game, which is quite different from wooden racquets, the long points, and the simple footwork that were in use no less than thirty years ago. When one watches the professional tennis playerÂ’s today, one notices that the strategy of tennis has also changed over the same time period. The classic, smooth, flowing ground strokes that were displayed by tennis professionals in major tournaments for the first two-thirds of the twentieth century have been replaced by a game that emphasizes power from the baseline and the ability to put a player away in one shot anytime the opponent is slightly out of position, or hits a shot that comes up short. Technology has changed from the use of both the wood and steel racket to the use of the composite racket, which has greater efficiency and accuracy. As a result tennis is better today, rather than the past, through advances in tennis technology and strategy.
