Orientalism: Origins and Consequences Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

From a constructivist standpoint, there is no greater social power than the collectivity of people. Whether connected by their race, gender, religion, or culture, the power these collective units wield far surpasses any military weapon. But, what if one were to tell you that all societal perceptions are merely perceptions of power structures in the world: that “they” are just a construct developed into a collective Western sub-conscious promoting an “us” versus “them” mentality spanning the times. In his seminal account of the origins, consequences, and general theory of Orientalism, Edward Said establishes a cause and effect relationship between European colonial supremacy, what we would know relate to American hegemony, and the influx of scholars, writers, and political figures (Orientalists) who created an artificially constructed representation disregarding “truth”.
