When looking at the economic collapse of 1873, one significant event stands out. This would be the failure of Jay Cooke and Company, the countrys preeminent investment banking company. After the Civil War railroad construction was booming and Jay Cook handled most of the government loans and was financing the Northern Pacific Railroad. The firm had realized they had overextended themselves and closed their doors declaring bankruptcy on September 18, 1873 (CoG, n.d.) The collapse swept through the nation, credit dried up, banks closed their doors, and even the New York stock Exchange closed its doors for 10 days.
