Workplace Privacy Rights: A Growing Debate As a society we are simple people. We like our coffee hot, a traffic free drive to work, and money in our pockets. One thing that is especially important is privacy, especially in the workplace. Newer technology especially on telephones, computer terminals, through electronic and voice mail, and when employees are using the Internet is allowing companies to keep a closer eye on their employees’ work habits, and therefore creating a less private work environment for the employees (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, 1993). Companies have various reasons for these actions, ranging from employee productivity, company security, or harassment. But the $20,000 question is, how protected are we? The Government says not very, even under the constitution.
