'The blood is the life!’ Is this a paraphrase of Jesus’ preaching at the Last Supper, or is this an exclamation made by one of Dracula’s disciples? The Messiah, Savior to all humanity, once taught his favorite twelve to drink his consecrated blood as one of the necessary steps to the attainment of salvation. Renfield, a character in Stoker’s Dracula, and a disciple of the supreme vampire himself agrees with Jesus Christ. Through these overtly Christian references, Bram Stoker presents Dracula as a figure capable of destroying a nation. Is Dracula actually an “alien [invader]” or is he a “dark mutation of Christian forms” (Herbert 111). A close reading of the novel will reveal that it is not only the death and bloodshed caused by Dracula that has the potential to ruin England. The major threat lies in Dracula’s ability to challenge and destroy the established Christian and Victorian values of nineteenth century England. Stoker’s Dracula takes cultural norms and turns them upside-down; one is left wondering what is good and what is evil? What is sacred and what is sac-relig......
