Carnivals' growth was accomplished through acquisitions of failed or struggling competitors and through adding new ships to its existing line. Carnival runs at 104 percent of its capacity and has the lowest cost in the industry. Nevertheless, it offers cruise in every possible segment of the market and is thus pursuing a broad differentiator strategy. Much of its success in its main line--Carnival Cruises-- is attributed to its marketing program that has been very successful. Nevertheless, Carnival is facing several challenges. For example, it attempts to activate more than the 7-8 percent of the U.S. market to experience a cruise to maintain profitable growth in an increasingly competitive industry. Second, strong competition with deep pockets--like Disney-- has entered the industry. Third, the industry might experience over capacity, which could be a potential problem, in particular in a recession as luxury expenses such as vacating are the first to be dropped. In addition, rising oil prices could put strong pressures on Carnival's margins.
