Introduction The discipline of International relations was officially established after the First World War in order to understand why conflicts and wars occur and what can be done to try to prevent such conflicts. The different theories in International Relations try to analyse the events and phenomena in world politics according to very different approaches. In this essay, we are going to present and then compare two of the International Relations Theories: Realism and Liberalism. Each theory being very complex, this essay do not pretend to give a complete analyse of each theory. We will just present their main assumptions and arguments and try to distinguish the different approaches within each theory. In a third part, we will confront the main arguments of Liberalism and Realism in order to highlight their differences. I.
