JOSEPH BEUYS..CULT FIGURE, ICON OR DELLUDED FANTASIST? Joseph Beuys plays a major role in art history and can be considered extremely influential in the post 1945 realms of sculpture and performance art. He seems to have excelled beyond the title of "artist" to adopt a cult status and has even been referred to as a shaman. Beuys' attitude towards art and the level of devotion he committed to his own personal art, extend into his own life, seeing his existence as part of his art: both his life and his sculpture staged. To explore the concept of Beuys' status as a cult figure, one has to establish exactly what criteria a cult figure needs to fulfill. The Oxford Dictionary states cult as " as system of worship: devoted attachment to a person: a religion regarded as unorthodox." Other dictionaries site a cult figure as "having great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement or work", and " an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal or thing as manifested by a body of admirers".
