Edgar Allen Poe Poe’s Life A horrifying poet, Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19,1809. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where he grew up with out his parents because the were traveling actors. At a young age, Poe’s father left his family and soon after that his mother died. After his family was destroyed, Poe then became a ward of John Allen and his family. The Allen family lived in Richmond, Virginia. When Poe was only six, the Allen family moved to the United Kingdom. Poe spent five years in The United Kingdom (1815-1820). Returning to Richmond, Poe enrolled into the University of Virginia in 1826. Poe had a short life at the University, having to dropout because of a gambling act that John Allen refused to pay. With John Allen refusing to pay for Poe’s debt, Poe and Allen fell apart. With the two not talking, Poe enlist into the army on May 26, 1827 under the name of Edgar A. Perry. That same year, Poe’s first work was published under a false name.
