Games on the Island The novel, Lord of the Flies, has many significant themes intertwined in its plot; but one of the most important ones is that ‘If one is willing to play games, he must accept the consequences’. All of the boys on the island played games. Whether they were emotional, physical, or mental, all of the games on the island had consequences. Jack Merridew, constantly jealous of Ralph and the attention and admiration he receives from the boys, plays games to manipulate and control the boys’ minds. He wins his games by threatening the boys with basic human fears such as pain and death, and frightening them into following him. “The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red. The tribe lay in a semicircle before him. The newly beaten and untied Wilfred was sniffling noisily in the background. ‘Tomorrow,’ went on the chief, ‘We shall hunt again.’” About three paragraphs before this statement, Robert informs Roger that “’The chief’s going to take us hunting.’ He jerked his head in the direction of the distant shelte......
