The Catcher in the Rye By J.D. Salinger is about a 16-year-old boy named Holden Caulfield. After being thrown out of boarding school, Holden decides to stay in New York by himself for a few days rather than facing the anger and disappointment of his parents. Nash K. Burger wrote a review on this book in the New York Time on July 16th, 1951. Burger writes that the problems Holden faces, his depression and his failings, are not his own fault. He writes that it is the result of a world that has even greater troubles, problems and sorrows than Holden. Burger is right because of three reasons. First, the greater troubles and sorrows of people Holden observes have a great effect on his happiness and mood. Secondly, the absence of a figure that understands and encourages Holden leads him to observe these greater troubles and feel as if they are his, too. Lastly, Holden is still unable to overcome childhood traumas because he has not had anyone to answer his questions about these troubling memories. While Holden is at Pencey and in New York, his surroundings affect his mood and his thought......
