Commentary of a passage in: Master Harold... and the Boys Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Page 55 - “That’s perfectly correct”… page 59 - “a kite in the sky”. The drama, “Master Harold”… and the boys, written by playwright Athol Fugard is similar to an incident in his life. The drama is set in the 1950s in South Africa, when the apartheid system was at its peak, when “masters” were white men and “boys” were black men or niggers, as they were referred to earlier. The playwright’s full name is Harold Athol Lannigan Fugard and he was called Hally when he was young. His parents owned St. George’s Park Tea Room (the plot of the drama) in Port Elizabeth, in which Sam Semela and Willie worked. However, the spitting incident that happens in the passage did not occur in the tea room, but while Harold was riding a bicycle. Also, in the play, Hally is three years older than the age of Fugard when this incident took place in his life. The passage begins when Hally is talking about his “good times” with his father and he tells Sam and Willie their favourite joke, one about a black man’s buttocks not being fair.
