More than 1 billion people in the world today live in conditions of poverty. Townsend (1979) stated that “Individuals, families and groups in the population can be said to be in poverty when they lack the resources to obtain the types of diet, participate in the activities and have the living conditions and amenities which are customary, or are at least widely encouraged or approved, in the societies to which they belong.” (2000, p. 387) Poverty has other various manifestations such as limited or lack of access to education, increasing morbidity and mortality from illness; homelessness, unsafe environments; and social discrimination and exclusion.
Social exclusion is being unable to participate in society because of a lack of resources that are customarily available to the general population. It can refer to both individuals, and communities in a broader framework, with some similarly linked problems with that of poverty such as low incomes, poor housing and high crime environments therefore poverty is one of the main contributors to being socially excluded. ......
