Aeneas development as a hero in book II of the Aeneid can be seen through his behaviour and actions throughout the book. Although he is seen as the ultimate Roman hero, his actions often left a lot to be desired, and occasionally his behaviour is completely contrary to the Roman values of piety and duty.
The first major example in the second book of the Aeneid of Aeneas acting unlike the hero he should be is when he tells the story of the Trojan horse being found on the beach. Here, Aeneas does not mention his own conduct: this may suggest that Aeneas was taken in by the Greeks trick as the other Trojans were, and did not wish to admit to Dido that he had been duped. This view does not show Aeneas as a particularly effective hero, if her can be fooled just as other men can be.
