The twentieth century shall be the century of Canada and of Canadian development, Laurier once said in a famous speech. In the beginning of the twentieth century, Laurier appointed Clifford Sifton as his Minister of Immigration. They both agreed that Western Canada needed to be developed. To make this goal a reality, Laurier and Sifton approved of an open-door policy for immigrants who wanted to come to Western Canada. Although it was named the open-door policy, it wasnt what it seemed. The open-door policy had many restrictions for immigrants, and it wasnt, in fact, open to all. Discrimination based on race was a huge factor for immigrants wanting to come to Canada. Chinese people were greatly discouraged, and a Chinese head-tax took place. Laurier believed that the immigration policy would increase prosperity to all, this wasnt the case. Aboriginal people who lived in the land were forced to move to reserves and sign treaties. In my opinion, Lauriers immigration policy was not open and prosperous to all.
