How does Dickens build up tension in Chapter One of Great Expectations?
This essay will address how Charles Dickens builds up tension in chapter one through analysing the setting, the characters of Pip and Magwitch, the language and dialogue, the historical and social context, and lastly the structure of the first chapter.
The opening chapter is set in a graveyard this immediately hints an air of fear because it is gloomy and sinister. It is situated in the middle of the marsh country, down by the river, within
twenty miles of the sea. The author creates a harsh surrounding throughout chapter one by using some brutal vocabulary, such as
raw afternoon, towards evening. This phrase gives the reader a picture of the setting that Dickens is trying to create. He wants it to look overwhelming against someone small, which is why Pip, an innocent orphan boy, is contrasted against a bleak place, overgrown with nettles.
