The purpose of the human skeleton is to protect the inside of the human body and to keep the body in structure. The term skeleton comes from a Greek word meaning "dried up". All 206 bones in the body make up the skeletal system. The function of the skeletal system: give shape and support to your body, protect your internal organs, major muscles are attached to provide movement, blood cells are performed in the center in the marrow, calcium and phosphorous compounds stored in the bones. Bones are living tissues because they grow and are not slid pieces. There are two main divisions in the skeleton: axial (support and protection), apppendiculal (allows movement). The compact bone is the dense tissue that gives bones strength. Periosteum is a thick membrane that contains blood vessels. The spongy bone is strong and light weight. It makes up most short and irregular bones and is usually found at the end of the bones. The marrow produces red blood cells and fills the spaces in the spongy bones.
