The Source Of Normativity What is the source of normativity? What does that mean and what are the arguments? Well, in 1625 Hugo Grotius stated that we all have obligations. He argued that we all have obligations whether or not you believe in God, or furthermore whether or not God even existed. According to his book, On The Law Of War And Peace, he stated that we all have obligations, even if we should concede that which cannot be conceded without the utmost wickedness, that there is no God, or that the affairs of men are of no concern to Him. (Hugo Grotius) Hugo Grotius was not the only one interested in ethics at the time though. There were two men who followed Grotius and his teachings, Thomas Hobbes and Samuel Pufendorf. These two men learned from Hugo, but when he went on to make the above statement, they disagreed with him. They believed that moral conduct was very useful to society, however it was not obligatory unless there was some sovereign authority that made it a law.
