Ruin is a Four Letter Word Ruin is inevitably caused by actions and decisions made by literary characters. The ruinous state of people does not just happen because of an unlucky draw of the cards. Ruin is like the infamous cause and effect situations many remember studying in elementary school; some type of action or decision made by a person is the cause. A ruinous mind set is the effect. Throughout the time of man, ruin plays a significant role in life. Ruin comes in many different forms. Ruin can refer to the “the remains of a fallen building” (1173) as described by Webster’s New World Dictionary. Another simple definition is simply “a person regarded as being physically, mentally, or morally a wreck of what he or she was.” (1173). Mental, moral, and even physical ruin is portrayed in numerous pieces of literature. Many sources of literature show ruin. Some titles include Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and Great Gatsby by F.
