Review of Paul Fussells WARTIME Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“War is Hell” is a phrase which has been used to describe the effects of war on not only those who actually participate but those on the homefront as well. Although, in all honesty, war is not a subject that I would normally choose to delve into, reading Paul Fussell’s Wartime has given me more of an insight to the realities of modern war. The manner in which the book is written serves to give an honest recount of what constitutes the way in which life was lived during the war. As I began to read the book I experienced much of what I expected. The writing was very dry, factual, and mechanical. It was all I could do to stay awake as I read. The focus on the machinery of the war gave the book a slow, monotonous beginning, yet it laid the groundwork and set the scene for the remainder of the book by illustrating the need for change from previous wars to World War II. It showed the ridiculous attitude of the old timers and the resistance to change, for instance: Calvary mounts were an idea inseparable from the tanks in the first place, as can be inferred from the......
