She was a very independent child who had to use her own imagination to entertain herself. She lived in bleak, miserable surroundings, this is mirrored in the novel. Charlotte Bronte has used her own childhood to write about a girl, Jane Eyre, who has lost both parents and is lonely in a miserable world; Jane is alone and her parents have died; she is left alone in a house where she entertains herself with her intelligence and imagination. Jane Eyre is a very confident girl who sticks up for herself to her aunty who acts as a dictator and in her aunties eyes is very rude and unappreciative.
