I. Introduction: The Bridge Project:
Two bridges were planned to be built in Alaska, the Gravina Island Bridge which would connect Ketchikan to Gravina Island and the Don Youngs Way bridge (former known as the Knick Arms Bridge) which would connect Anchorage to Port MacKenzie. The cost of the project is estimated to be a total of $454 million, which would be funded through federal taxes. Congressman Don Young and Senator Ted Stevens both of Alaska proposed the bridge project.
Both bridges are being criticized as Bridges to Nowhere, a term that is not exclusively used for the Alaskan Bridges but refers to bridges with high expenses and no use in general, as they lead into nowhere. The two Alaskan bridges gained negative popularity as more critiques were written claiming the bridges were a waste of money.
