Blindness in King Lear Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The issue of sight is one of the main themes in Shakespeares King Lear. Although, King Lear has the ability to see physically, he is unable to see the truth. On the other hand, Gloucester who was blinded during the play, regained his ability to see the truth which helped him to not lose his loyal son Edgar. Whereas, King Lear unfortunately loses his daughter in the end of the play because he could not see her true love.
The first mistake which showed us that Lear is blind was when he does not believe Cordelia that she loves him truly. He then divides his kingdom between his two mean, older daughters Goneril and Regan who just pretend to love Lear. Kent tried to convince Lear that Cordelia loves him the most. He said to Lear: Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least. (Shakespeare, 1.1.153), but still Lear does not want to face the truth. Therefore, he banishes Kent by saying: Out of my sight! (Shakespeare, 1.1.158) Lear also expels Cordelia with the words:
For we have no such daughter, nor shall ever see that face of hers again. Therefore, be gone, without our gr......
