There are three types of assessment, normative, criterion based and diagnostic and a myriad of ways to use each of them. (Irish National Teachers Organization (INTO) 1986)
Normative assessment compares each students work to the others and in effect gives a ranking of performance. Criterion based assessment compares the students work to a pre-determined set of outcomes and gives an indication of how well the student can meet the criterion or objectives. Diagnostic and self-referenced assessment compares the student to their previous performance and can be used to pin-point strengths and weaknesses.
