In order to increase its capital and invest in research, a company might consider offering itself as publicly traded company in the U.S., Canada or overseas. Benchmarking is the most effective way to determine if going public is beneficial and most optimum way to reach companys goals.
Alaska Communications Systems (ACS) provides telecommunications services to individuals, and businesses throughout Alaska. During the first quarter of 2006, revenue increased 6.8 percent to $82.6 million from $77.4 million in first quarter 2005. Going public the company also was able to address its problem with debt. Per David Wilson, ACS senior vice president and chief financial officer: "We reduced the debt by approximately $88 million and reduced the cost of the debt by about 2 percentage points down to about 6.4 percent" (Business Editors, 2003, p. 1).
