The poem which I am going to be comparing with ‘Night of the Scorpion’ by Nissim Ezekiel will be ‘Blessing’ By Imtiaz Dharker. Both poems are similar but they have different viewpoints as one is positive and the other is negative until the end. Ezekiel portrays the peasants ‘like swarms of flies’ that came to ‘paralyse the Evil One’. Portraying the peasants in this way gives us the feeling there is a lot of noise making things more panicky and stressful, he also may mean they are attracted to drama but it could also be for the mothers well-meaning to help cure her from the Devils (scorpions) sting. Whereas ‘Blessing’ is positive when describing the villagers rushing to collect the water and Dharker illustrates this as a ‘congregation’. This suggests that they are celebrating its arrival or even worshipping it. The title ‘Night of the Scorpion’ sounds like the poem includes horror however, it is exactly the opposite and instead we feel sympathy for the scorpion as ‘ten hours of steady rain had driven him to crawl beneath a sack of rice’.
