Discuss how the theme of class is developed through Pips visit to Satis House The theme of class is developed through Pips visit to Satis house by highlighting a contrast between a Victorian Aristocracy class and a Victorian working class, which Pip belongs to. Great Expectations is a Bildungsroman because the reader follows Pip through his life exploring different events that older Pip realised to be of importance – The visit to Satis House, Chapter 8. Many of the themes Charles Dickens explores that are common to Bildungsroman’s, such as love. We learn about the theme of love when Pip falls in love with Estella. We notice this when at first notices that Estella is “pretty” then the story goes on to a part when Pip beats another boy up and Estella allows him to kiss her. As much as he wanted to, the kiss wasn’t what he expected as he felt “given to the coarse common boy as a piece of money might have been, and that it was worth nothing” This visit made Pip aware of how he stands in the world, and how much better-off the rich: Estella and Ms Havisham are.
