During the 1920's the Republican Party reigned supreme. Initially represented by Warren Harding (who would subsequently become the face of corruption) the party leadership and Presidency was succeeded by 'Silent' Calvin Coolidge. Finally the Republican Party was voted out after the incomprehension of Herbert Hoover, who was extremely reluctant to offer support.
Warren Harding was successful at reigning in the initial minor depression in the U.S. following the war, but, unfortunately, this was the height of his success. Evidence of his corrupt leadership became obvious with the Teapot Dome Scandal. He was succeeded by Calvin Coolidge who, additionally, adopted the 'laissez faire' approach by removing government, as much as possible, from free enterprise. He was quoted: "The man who builds a factory builds a temple... The man who works there worships there" and "Less government in business and more business in government".
