Future of the United Nations Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Question: ‘Often described as a “talking shop” the United Nations remains extremely important as a centre for multi-lateral diplomacy.’ Discuss. Founded in 1945, the United Nations is not without critics over some of its shortcomings on certain fundamental issues it was meant to address at its inception. Nonetheless, it is inaccurate and totally unfair to describe it as merely a ‘talking shop’. Contrary to this view, the United Nations has played an important and vital role in many international political, economic, social and humanitarian issues since the signature of the Charter in 1945 in San Francisco. This was the case immediately after World War II, when the founders of the organization held firm convictions that coming together under a legally binding framework, with the goal of working together for peace and security, as well as improving living conditions of all peoples, was the only hope countries had of "saving future generations from the scourge of war".
