Henry VIII was born in 1491 as the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Henrys reign as a king is perhaps less remembered than the fact that he was married to six different women throughout his life.
He married Catherine of Aragon, widow of his brother Arthur in 1509 and was separated from her in 1533. From that marriage he had a daughter, called Mary. In 1533 Henry VIII married the pregnant Anne Boleyn, who gave him a second daughter called Elizabeth. Anne Boleyn was executed in May 1536 and the grounds of unfaithfulness, which was considered to be treason. By the end of the same month, Henry had already married Jane Seymour, who died during the birth of his only male heir, Edward, in October 1536. At the beginning of 1540 the king arranged a marriage with the German princess Anne of Cleves. He had seen a portrait of her done by the painter Hans Holbein and had fallen in love with her.
