Battle of Gettysburg Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The American Civil War was fought over cultural, social, and economical beliefs that divided the nation. The war set father against son, brother against brother, and American against American. The Civil War was a violent, devastating war that claimed the lives of over 620,000 men on both sides, wounded hundreds of thousands more, and left the country, especially the South, in complete destruction, and total chaos. Though there were countless battles, and skirmishes fought during the Civil War, it was a battle fought entirely by circumstance that changed the course of the war, the consequences of which reshaped American politics, and culture. it is known as The Battle of Gettysburg. After defeating the Union army at Chancellorsville, Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia started moving his army through the Shenandoah Valley to begin an invasion on northern soil, by doing so Lee hoped to resupply his depleted army with food, clothing, shoes, horses, and supplies confiscated from northern lands.
