The German immigrants faced many hardships when they first arrived in the colonies of the New World. They were some of the first people to be among the early settlers of the New World. Although they faced many perils and hard times, they were able to escape most of the tragedy and harsh treatments that plagued many immigrant groups. The German immigrants were among the first ones to colonize Jamestown and establish the settlement in 1608 and the Dutch colony of New Amsterdamnow known as New Yorkin 1620. One reason for the immigration boom was the religious tolerance. Here they had more freedom to develop their religious beliefs and be without persecution.
The German immigration has a long history( see figure 1-1). For over 300 years, they have become a driving force in the forming of American life. Nearly 43 million people acknowledge that there chief ancestry begins in Germany (U.S. census Bureau July 2004).
