The sudden incestuous marriage of Queen Gertrude and Claudius suggests an ongoing affair and disloyalty to Hamlet's father. Having witnessed how his own mother could be capable of such betrayal to his father, Hamlet now fears that all women are capable of the same thing. In addition, Hamlet sees women as creatures of lust, arrogance, and falseness, and "breeder of sinners". When reading Hamlet it becomes clear right from the beginning that Hamlet has a close relationship with his mother, Gertrude, as he loves and respects her. We can see Hamlet and Gertrude providing a loving behavior for one another in the opening scene. However, as the play develops we see their relationship slowly break down. The role of Gertrude allows one to see how Hamlets insanity develops due to the fact that her actions are mainly what drives Hamlet crazy. When Gertrude marries Hamlet’s uncle soon after his father’s death, Hamlet feels as if Gertrude has betrayed everyone. This almost makes it incapable of forgiving her. Hamlet is almost driven to the edge as he sees him mother tenderly kiss and hug Claud......
